17 happy volunteers at the St Denis' church East Hatley, Cambridgeshire, churchyard tidy-up on 4th August 2019. Micky Astor was our 17th helper – unfortunately, he had to leave before our photo session. Well done and thank you to you all for your hard work in getting all that long grass cut, cleared and stacked.

To cut the long grass successfully requires this special 'scissor' mower – brilliantly operated on the day by Steve Greenhalgh. The mower was bought six years ago specifically for this task.

To cut the long grass successfully requires this special 'scissor' mower – brilliantly operated on the day by Steve Greenhalgh. The mower was bought six years ago specifically for this task.

Hero of the day was Steve Greenhalgh, who quickly mastered the complexities and vibrating nature of our scissor mower.

Steve soon got into the rhythm of knowing where to place the mower – which pushes the cut grass where it feels like to hide the obvious path.

A quick yank on the handle bars...

...gives an instant change of direction without having to let go of the controls.

It didn't take long for Peter and Jo Hayward to fill their wheelbarrow!

Lingering after the tea break were John O’Sullivan, Joyce Denby, Peter Mann and Sue and John Wright. As always, Nicola Jenkins supplied a terrific array of biscuits and drinks, supplemented by a bowl of plums from Joyce Denby.

It was useful to have a trailer to dump the grass into – the grass was taken to convenient stacks in opposite corners of the churchyard.

With his pitch folk – ideal for this work – John Wright had no difficulty in piling in the grass...

...then back to finding another pile to tackle.
