The Hatley Village Association, or HVA, as it’s commonly called, had its first ‘under new management’ event on 4th November: a pop-up pub social evening at the ‘The Old Hatley Arms’ in the village hall.

Linda Hudson, who ran the bar, tells me it was pretty busy from when the doors opened at seven o’clock and got busier and busier as the evening progressed – and how nice it was to see families with their children.

I was away at a family do, and am really sorry to have missed it – but thank you to everyone who came and, of course, to Linda and my HVA colleagues who made it happen. BTW – I love the extra lighting around the bar and curtains! (Click on the photo for a much larger version.)

And I see Jenny Ollerenshaw (41 EH) had an impressive display of her handmade books, boxes and cards – thanks for putting it up, Jenny… looks like some neat ideas for Christmas gifts.

Dates for your diary

This is our first programme of events – from a Christmas Shindig next month to more pop-up pub evenings in the village hall to celebrating the king’s coronation next year. Please put them in your diary…

  • Saturday, 3rd December / 1.00 to 5.00 pm / Hatley village hall.
Christmas Shindig: the former Christmas Tea – we will still be serving food, coffees and teas but there will be a licensed bar too. And (of course) we’ll have a raffle, craft table for the children and plenty of fun for the grown-ups. Do come and join us to get into the festive mood.

  • Tuesday, 6th December / 10.00 am to 1.00 pm / Hatley village hall.
Coffee Morning: excellent coffee, tea and wonderful cakes.

  • Friday, 20th January 2023 / 7.00 to 10.00 pm / Hatley village hall – licensed bar.
Winter gathering pop-up pub – social evening. Leave the New Year hangovers and the gloom of winter behind and you come along to the village hall for a nice social evening among friends and neighbours, an opportunity to enjoy a drink and walk home! For the evening the village hall will be converted into the ‘Old Hatley Arms’ pub. Licensed bar.
  • Saturday, 11th February / 7.00 to 10.00 pm / Hatley village hall – licensed bar.
Valentine’s Pub Quiz – this year it will be a social / pub event as well as a quiz night. Your ticket (price to be decided) will include a buffet. Prizes for the winning team. Licensed bar / over 18s only.
  • Sunday, 19th February / 2.00 pm / Outside 34 East Hatley.
Annual Hatley Pancake Race – pancakes supplied, but please bring a frying pan; prizes for the winners.

  • Friday, 17th March / 7.00 to 10.00 pm / Hatley village hall – licensed bar.
St Patrick’s night social. Bring on your green! St Patrick’s Day is usually packed with parades, good luck charms and all things green. Let’s celebrate appropriately at the ‘Old Hatley Arms’ pub aka Hatley village hall. Fancy dress, silly hats and whatever else will be warmly welcomed! Expect a raffle. Licensed bar.
  • Sunday, 9th April / 10.00 am / Hatley St George playing field after the church service. Time to be confirmed.
    Easter egg hunt.
  • Saturday, 6th May / All day / Hatley St George playing field.
The Coronation of HM King Charles III – Our joint celebrations, East Hatley and Hatley St George, in a cross between the Summer Fête and a good old fashioned street party. There will be food, a licensed bar and a hot beverages tent. You can look forward to fun events throughout the day – as well as stalls selling plants, local crafts and much else. The village hall will also be open for the entire day.

In addition there are the wonderful Hatley Coffee Mornings run by Linda Hudson in the village hall – on the first Tuesday of the month, 10.00 am to 1.00 pm. I always enjoy the excellent coffee and tea and the delightful cakes as well as having a good chin-wag with whoever else is there.

The next Coffee Morning is on Tuesday, 6th December.

We’ll be posting details about each event on the Hatley Website and the Hatley Facebook page, with reminders via the Hatley WhatsApp.

The HVA has been around for several years, organising and putting on quizzes, talks, coffee mornings, pancake races, village fêtes and other events for everyone in Hatley to enjoy.

But as is the way of these things, stuff happens (like the pandemic), people move on and, almost suddenly, it seems, there are very few events in the pipeline.

So, I thought it was time to get the HVA going again, form a new committee of volunteers and make things happen.

My delight is that so far the committee comprises…

Carole Cooper, East Hatley
Steve Greenhalgh, East Hatley
Amy Hellyer, Hatley St George
Richard Hellyer, Hatley St George
Linda Hudson, East Hatley
Alan Pinney, Hatley St George
Sarah Titmus, Hatley St George
Martin Ward, East Hatley

We’re open to your ideas for events, so if you feel we’re missing a trick, please let me know – you can email or phone me: Carole Cooper / 07736 184 108.

The HVA operates under the auspices of the Parish Council to raise funds for Hatley community projects, including the village hall, Hatley St George church and the playing field in Hatley St George – this link will tell you more about the HVA and its predecessors, including the Hatley Villages Committee.
