40 to 30 mph – what do you think?
Deadline is week commencing 21st September

The 40 mph speed sign in Hatley St George – should the limit be reduced to 30 mph?

For goodness knows how many years Hatley people have been complaining about the speed of traffic on the ‘main road’ through Hatley St George and on through East Hatley to Croydon.

The 40 mph speed sign in Hatley St George – should the limit be reduced to 30 mph?

The 40 mph speed sign in Hatley St George – should the limit be reduced to 30 mph?

It must be at least 20 years since a 40 mph restriction was imposed on this stretch of road and five or six years since the speed monitoring sign was erected.

That followed three years of a small Speedwatch team establishing the statistical fact that well over 60 per cent of all traffic using this stretch of road were breaking the speed limit – some drivers were recorded doing over 60 mph.

The police seem to find all sorts of excuses not to send officers armed with speed guns to our villages – so there is no real deterrent to slow speeding motorists.

And getting the Highways people at the County Council to agree to reducing the limit to 30 mph is no easy matter, even with the more precise and much greater volume of data produced by the speed monitoring sign.  Changing the limit costs several thousand pounds, so it’s not done on a whim.

The authorities need convincing a lower limit is not just a Good Idea, but is really necessary if a very serious accident is to be avoided – Miss Fate has been pretty kind to us so far in Hatley St George, but that’s no reason to assume she will remain so.

Which is why the Parish Council has taken the initiative and recently put a survey form through everybody’s letterbox in Hatley St George and East Hatley to find out what you think.

Please do complete the survey – the deadline is week commencing 21st September when one or our parish councillors will be around to collect it.  If you miss them, please return the survey to the shop and post office in Hatley St George by Friday, 25th September.

Thank you.
