Hatley’s shop questionnaire: answers pour in (but more welcome)

Of the 81 homes in East Hatley and Hatley St George, 32 residents kindly responded to the questionnaire circulated around the two villages last month.

The mathematicians among you will have instantly computed that that’s as a near-as-makes-no-difference 40% response – politicians and commercial companies would cry for such an impressive result, so well done Sylvia and Mick Marshall, who run the shop and post office, which remains under threat of closure.

But they are, unfortunately, still talking in small numbers of users of the shop, with only seven of the 32 who responded using the shop every day and nine once a week – to which must be added those who didn't fill in the form but use the shop anyway.

More encouragingly, there are eight more families than before having bread and milk delivered to their homes – for some, one of the shop’s most useful services.

Of the ‘wish list’ part of the questionnaire, top was selling newspapers, a regular fish van and a veg box collection – the latter, via Wood View Farm Shop in Gamlingay (just ring the Farm Shop on 650 200 to place your order), has already been actioned. Newspapers and the fish van are being ‘looked into,’ as selling newspapers, in particular, is not quite so straightforward as it might seem.

And on opening times, everyone wants the shop to be open most of the day – but, as Sylvia points out, it is already open from 7.00 am for much of the day and they usually stay open all day Sunday as well.

For those who haven’t yet completed the questionnaire, or have lost it, you can download it here – there’s no closing date – and all comments are welcome..

Don’t forget – use it or lose it.
